Airbrushing & Base Coating
Paints Used
Prep the mini, remove the mold lines, give it a wash, and pin it to a handle. Generally, get the model ready. In this example I have drilled through a base and the boot's underside of the mini, and then glued a wire to both sides.
At 30 PSI and using a 0.3 nozzle. Mix Black Primer with Thinner in a 2:1 mix, and then add a couple of drops of Acrylic Retarder using a pipette (I used 40 to 20 primer to thinner). Mix this in a stainless steel cup and pour it into the airbrush cup. I locked off my airbrush to only allow between 1/3 to 1/2 of needle movement. You want to do lots of thin coats, and be sure to check every other coat there is no dust, hair, or particles is stuck. Use a soft makeup brush to remove this and continue airbrushing.
Once primed, leave it for at least 24h to cure, and then airbrush Black all over the mini to help seal in the primer and have a more even surface to work with. It can vary on what the ratio is but I used 10 : 7 ratio of paint to Thinner with 2 drops of flow improver, at 30 PSI. You just want to give a nice coat over everything
Next is to airbrush the yellow. Start with Averland Sunset with a drop or two of water and flow improver. Slowly build up layers of yellow. It will start to look green at a point due to the black under coat but keep slowly building layers.
Once you have a nice coat of warm yellow, use Yriel Yellow with water, Acrylic Retarder and flow improver. Once again start to slowly build up layers till you have a nice strong coat of yellow.
Once the yellow is done, black out the black armor parts using a brush (everything but the chest and groin armor) with some thinned Black with water and a bit of Daler-Rowney matt glaze medium to give it a slight satin finish. If you manage to get black on areas, use Averland Sunset to cover the black and then use Yriel Yellow to get the same value / color again.
